ORIA offers its principles to be examined, tested, contested, and translated across cultures — an offer, not a verdict — and expects that examination to change the principles, not merely to spread them.
Universalism without erasure
ORIA’s universalism must never mean one culture imposed on all others, all traditions reduced to interchangeable symbols, the claim that all religions teach the same thing, or treating Western categories — including ORIA’s own analytic tools — as neutral universal defaults. Descriptions of other traditions must be recognisable to their thoughtful adherents.
Belonging, and the right to leave
Belonging in ORIA is layered and role-dependent, not exclusive by default, and no one belongs to ORIA. People may hold ORIA alongside another tradition without blurring real contradictions — the other tradition’s welcome is its own to give. This includes the right to un-belong, from ORIA first of all; exit is meant to be undramatic. Rhetoric like “ORIA is your real family,” loyalty tests, shunning, and surveillance are prohibited.
Protecting Indigenous and sacred traditions
Protection here is prohibition-first. ORIA does not create “Indigenous-inspired” practices — the category “inspired by” is, here, the category “taken from.” It builds no composite universal myth from borrowed pieces, and it does not rewrite another tradition’s story as ORIA scripture. Cultural review precedes any public writing, imagery, or naming that touches these traditions.
A legitimacy not yet earned
ORIA does not currently claim multicultural or global legitimacy. What minimum of genuine cross-cultural participation would be required before any such claim is itself an open question (oq-0011, oq-0020) — and the claim is not made until it is earned.
